UK or Malaysia? Compare tuition, living costs, visas, part-time and post-study work, family rules and UK branch campuses to choose the right option for Bangladeshi students.
For most Bangladeshi students, the choice between the UK and Malaysia comes down to budget versus post-study options. Malaysia is usually far cheaper, with lower tuition, lower living costs and a simpler, faster student visa process, and it even hosts branch campuses of UK universities. The UK costs much more but offers one-year master's degrees, the Graduate Route for post-study work and a wider choice of universities. Bangladeshi graduates are currently not eligible for Malaysia's Graduate Pass, so Malaysia has no equivalent post-study work route for them.
This guide compares the UK and Malaysia on tuition, living costs, admission, visas, work rights, family rules and career outcomes, so you can decide which suits your goals and budget.
Figures were checked on official UK government, Malaysian government (EMGS) and university websites in October 2026. Fees and rules change regularly, so confirm the latest details before applying. UK costs are converted at about £1 = BDT 163; Malaysian fees are shown in Malaysian ringgit (RM).

Malaysia examples
Universiti Malaya (public): the 2025/26 international fee structure lists programme fees such as RM89,200 for undergraduate Computer Science and around RM41,000–RM43,000 for some master's programmes, based on the minimum period of study (UM fee structure).
Taylor's University (private): Bachelor of Computer Science total of about RM152,000 including tax for the September 2026 intake over three years.
University of Nottingham Malaysia (UK branch campus): RM59,000 per year for BSc Computer Science and business programmes for international students from January 2027, plus 6% SST (Nottingham Malaysia fees).
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (UK branch campus): 2026/27 international fees of about RM51,000 per year for BSc Computing Science and about RM63,900 in total for taught MSc programmes, plus SST (Heriot-Watt Malaysia fees).
Malaysian private universities may also charge separate international student fees and deposits, so ask for a full fee schedule. Compare the total programme cost, not just yearly fees.
Living Costs and Visa Funds
UK: for the Student visa you must show living costs for up to nine months. For applications made before 30 November 2026, this is £1,171 per month outside London and £1,529 per month in London; for applications made on or after 30 November 2026, it rises to £1,203 and £1,570 (GOV.UK). Outside London, that is about £10,800 (around BDT 17.6 lakh) for nine months under the new rate.
Malaysia: the University of Nottingham Malaysia estimates about RM1,080–RM1,970 per month for on-campus living, and EMGS publishes an average budget of about US$582 per month (EMGS cost of living).
Visa Costs and Process
UK Student visa
Visa fee £558 and Immigration Health Surcharge £776 per year.
Requires a CAS, proof of funds held for 28 days, English evidence and a TB test.
Usually a decision within three weeks after applying from outside the UK.
Some universities set higher deposits or earlier deadlines for Bangladeshi applicants, and some have paused recruitment from Bangladesh.
Malaysia Student Pass (EMGS)
Your institution applies to EMGS on your behalf, and you receive an electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL).
EMGS fees include a processing fee of RM1,600 for a pass of over 6 and up to 12 months, eVAL, medical screening, insurance and pass charges (EMGS fee schedule). Universities such as Monash Malaysia estimate the total at roughly RM2,500 for a first-year pass.
EMGS's client charter is 14 working days for a complete application.
After arrival, you complete medical screening and passport endorsement.

Admission Requirements
After HSC: many top UK universities ask HSC students to complete a foundation year, while some accept strong HSC results directly. In Malaysia, some public universities, such as Universiti Malaya, accept HSC for direct entry, and private universities often offer a foundation route.
Master's: UK universities typically ask for a CGPA of about 2.5–3.3 out of 4 depending on the university; Malaysian universities set their own requirements.
English: UK degree-level study requires English at CEFR B2, often IELTS 6.0–6.5. Malaysian universities commonly ask for around IELTS 5.0–6.0 for undergraduate study, depending on the university and course.
Part-Time Work and Post-Study Work
UK: degree-level students at universities can usually work up to 20 hours per week in term time and full time in vacations. After graduation, the Graduate Route gives 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027 (GOV.UK Graduate visa).
Malaysia: international students can work up to 20 hours per week only during semester breaks or holidays longer than seven days, in permitted sectors such as restaurants, mini markets and hotels, with approval (EMGS FAQ). Malaysia's Graduate Pass allows eligible graduates to stay for 12 months, but Bangladesh is not currently on the eligible nationality list (EMGS Graduate Pass).
Bringing Family
UK: taught master's and undergraduate students generally cannot bring dependants; research students and government-sponsored students may.
Malaysia: postgraduate students can apply for dependant passes for eligible family members; Bangladeshi undergraduates generally cannot (EMGS dependant pass).
The Middle Option: UK Branch Campuses in Malaysia
Several UK universities have campuses in Malaysia. The University of Nottingham Malaysia states that its degree certificate names the University of Nottingham, not a separate Malaysian body. These campuses let you earn a UK-university degree with Malaysian living costs, though fees are higher than at many Malaysian universities, and visa and work rules follow Malaysian law. Some programmes also offer a chance to transfer to the UK campus for part of the course.
